Do Good Gainesville is committed to making dogoodgainesville.org usable by everyone, including people who use screen readers, navigate by keyboard, or have low vision or color blindness. We use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA as our target standard.
What We've Done
- Checked and adjusted text and background colors throughout the site to meet WCAG AA contrast requirements (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text and icons).
- Added descriptive alt text to photos so screen reader users know what they're looking at.
- Structured every page with proper heading levels (one H1 per page, nested subheadings) so the page outline makes sense when read aloud or navigated by keyboard.
- Labeled every form field so screen readers announce what information is being asked for, and made all forms usable with a keyboard alone.
- Gave links and buttons that rely on an icon (like video play buttons) a text description for screen readers, even when the visible label is just a symbol.
Known Limitations
This is an ongoing effort, not a finished state. A few things we're still working on:
- Some uploaded videos don't have captions yet. We're working to add them as content is uploaded.
- Some older or archived pages may not fully meet these standards yet — we prioritize fixes on the pages most people actually use.
